Military Records
No records give better insight into the times when our ancestors lived than military records. Many will even provide a date and place of birth.

To conserve space, I have not given any details into the history of the wars, except for specific numbers. I recommend the following Rootsweb mailing list to anyone researching military in New York State: New York Military List. Be sure to put the word subscribe in the subject line.

Key:
FHL - Family History Library (LDS)
NARA - National Archives
SARA - New York State Archives
NYPL - New York Public Library
NYSL - New York State Library
NOTE: The listings contain the FHL computer number. Each LDS Family History Center is equipped with a computer. The computer number is simply the code number to access these records.

To order from NARA, please send an email and request either Form NATF 86 for military service records or form NATF 85 for military pension records. These forms are not currently available online.
